Oriol R. Gutierrez Jr., Editor-in-Chief, COVID Health / Editorial Director, Smart + Strong Oriol Gutierrez is editor-in-chief of COVIDHealth.com, a national website for people living with, and affected by, COVID-19. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 antibodies in 2020. He is also editorial director of Smart + Strong, the publisher of COVID Health and COVIDHealth.com. He brings to Smart + Strong his passion for advocacy on behalf of people with HIV, as well as editorial experience since 1996.
His responsibilities also include serving as editor-in-chief of TuSalud, Smart + Strong’s bilingual Spanish/English magazine for Latino health and wellness. He also is editor-in-chief of Hep, Smart + Strong’s magazine for hepatitis.
Oriol was managing editor of DiversityInc magazine, which covers diversity management in the workplace; executive director of the DiversityInc Foundation; and communications director for DiversityInc Media, LLC.
He co-founded LGNY Latino, the first bilingual Spanish/English LGBT U.S. periodical, as publisher and editor-in-chief. Earlier in his career, Oriol was executive editor of Pet Business magazine and business director of publications for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
He often participates as a speaker, moderator or panelist at various conferences and events. He has appeared on NY1, NPR and Sirius XM. He was named one of the “25 Most Influential GLBT Latinos” by MyLatinoVoice.com.
He is a graduate of New York University in New York City, with a B.A. in journalism and an M.S. in publishing. He is the former vice president of print and new media for the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. He also served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

Jennifer previously worked as the managing editor for publications including Brill’s Content, Cable World and Gear. Before working in publishing, Jennifer worked for the Jane Adams Center, a nonprofit community center in Chicago. Jennifer recently served on the board of HIV + Aging Research Project–Palm Springs, which aims to improve the lives of those aging with HIV by studying the impact on long-term survivors. She previously served as the board vice president of Visual AIDS, a nonprofit organization that utilizes art to fight AIDS. She earned a BS in communications at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Liz Highleyman, Science Editor, Smart + Strong Liz Highleyman is the science editor of Smart + Strong. She oversees all treatment and research content across all brands. She began writing for Smart + Strong publications in 2000 and joined the editorial team in 2017.
Liz has been a health journalist and medical editor for more than 20 years, covering HIV, viral hepatitis, cancer and other health issues. She has written for publications including the Bay Area Reporter, aidsmap/infohep, HCV Advocate, ACRIA’s Achieve, Positively Aware, The Body, the Well Project and MedPage Today.
She previously worked as an editor of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s Bulletin of Experimental Treatments for AIDS (BETA) and as health editor for Ask Jeeves (now Ask.com), before becoming a freelancer in the early 2000s. She has been editor-in-chief of HIVandHepatitis.com since 2011.
Liz graduated from the University of Rochester with a B.A. in cognitive science and continued her education at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is a member of the Association of Health Care Journalist and the American Medical Writers Association.

Previously, Kate was editor-in-chief of Today’s Black Woman and the managing editor of Black Men magazine. She supervised the launch of the African-American lifestyle titles in 1995 and 1996, respectively.
For 10 years prior, Kate was the editor-in-chief of two teen entertainment magazines, namely, Word Up! and Rap Masters. She also served as editor-in-chief for Black Teen and Female Bodybuilding and was the entertainment news editor and on-camera talent for “The Video Zone,” a local music program on cable television.
Kate graduated from Columbia University’s School of Journalism with an M.A. in Health and Science journalism. She received her M.A. in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and is a graduate of Hunter College in New York City, with a B.A. in Mass Communications. She lives in Hackensack, New Jersey. Jeremy Grayzel, CEO, Smart + Strong and CDM Publishing LLC With more than 30 years of business and publishing expertise, Jeremy Grayzel formed CDM Publishing LLC in 2004 in order to purchase Smart + Strong, publisher of POZ magazine and other health care-oriented publications.
Prior experience include president of VNU eMedia Inc., the second largest business-to-business publisher in the United States; founder and CEO of GrayFire Information Services, a leading fax and internet developer that created customized publishing services aggregating content from over 100 major sources; and president and COO of Family Media Inc., a major consumer publishing company with 11 publications and a print circulation of over 10 million.
He has been a member of YPO/WPO since 1988 and served on the board of directors of the Metro New York Chapter. He is a past chairman of the Emerging Business Council of the Information Industry Association.
Jeremy earned his BS and MBA at New York University. Ian Anderson, President, Smart + Strong Ian joined Smart + Strong as Vice President/General Manager in June 2005 and was promoted to President/COO in January 2007. He has responsibility for all external and internal business management including technology and print production services, circulation and product development, edit, and business planning. Previously, Ian spent six years at VNU eMedia (now known as Nielsen Business Media) as Director of Operations and then as Director of Product Development. Prior to VNU, he spent six years at Editor & Publisher magazine as Research Director and General Manager. Ian earned his BA in Communications at Ramapo College, Mahwah, New Jersey. |
